Byron Seeds is researching forage Spring barley. There are several new varieties that look promising for high sugar and fiber digestibility. Robust Spring Barley is a 6-rowed variety good for grain and forage. This is a taller plant, so it is excelent for straw of hay.
Barley is gaining popularity as a forage because it tends to be high in sugar and very soft with high digestibility, making it very palatable. The downside with barley is it cannot take very wet areas or may winterkill. As a grain, barley is 10 days earlier than wheat making for a great for a double crop.
