Byron Seeds is researching forage Spring barley. There are several new varieties that look promising for high sugar and fiber digestibility. Robust Spring Barley is a 6-rowed variety good for grain and forage. This is a taller plant, so it is excellent for straw of hay.
Barley is gaining popularity as a forage because it tends to be high in sugar and very soft with high digestibility, making it very palatable. The downside with barley is it cannot take very wet areas. Spring Barley can be planted in the fall for forage. If plant spring barley in August it will have a forage crop in October and November weather permitting. Spring barley will winter kill. Use a winter barley to over winter for a spring crop.
