Byron Seeds is researching forage Spring barley. There were several new varieties that look promising for high sugar and fiber digestibility. We have finally decided on the best spring barley, Haybet.
- 2-rowed, hooded variety with white kernels
- Late heading – best used for forage
- High protein forage production per acre
Haybet is gaining popularity as a forage because it tends to be high in sugar and very soft with high digestibility, making it very palatable. The downside with Haybet is it cannot take very wet areas or may winterkill. As a grain, Haybet is 10 days earlier than wheat making for a great for a double crop.
