AF7301 is the next generation of BMR 6 forage sorghums. As a male sterile product, it will not produce grain in the absence of nearby pollen. This offers several distinct advantages. AF7301 is high yielding, produces high levels of non-structural carbohydrates in the stalk, provides improved forage digestibility and overall energy content, and under most conditions, can be allowed to reach a moisture level where it can be harvested in a single pass through the field. Without grain, the plant will not cannibalize the stalk. This means it will have higher energy content than other grain-producing BMR hybrids. AF7301 has improved standabilty when compared to earlier BMR hybrids.

Soil temperature should be at least 60º F. Planting depth should be 1”-1.5”. Can be no-tilled into the stubble of winter and spring crops. Averge Seeds per Pound: 14,000 – 16,000 and maximum plants/Acre should not exceed 100,000.
A soil test is highly recommended to establish a base line of fertility requirements. Nitrogen fertility should not exceed 110 units per acre including available nitrogen in the soil. Potassium levels should be kept up, particularly if the soil pH is lower than 6.2. If soil pH is above 7.5, a foliar application of iron may be necessary or Iron Chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves) may be a problem. This can be corrected by foliar feeding iron while plants are still young.
AF7301 is usually harvested between 95 to 105 days after emergence. If a foreign pollen source is present, hybrid will produce some grain content but harvest should be indicated by whole plant moisture.
Avoid large nitrogen applications prior to expected drought periods which can increase Prussic Acid concentration for several weeks after application. Do not harvest drought-damaged plants within four days following a good rain. Do not greenchop within seven days of a killing frost. Cut at a higher stubble height, nitrates tend to accumulate in the lower stalk. Wait one month before feeding silage to give Prussic Acid enough time to escape.
